Google successfully discovers SQLite zero-day vulnerability using AI tool Big Sleep

Recently, Google announced that its AI tool, Big Sleep, which is based on Large Language Models (LLMs), successfully detected a zero-day vulnerability in the open-source database engine SQLite.
This discovery marks the first time that AI has identified a major security vulnerability in a real-world environment, representing a breakthrough for AI in security detection.
Reportedly, Big Sleep, formerly known as "Project Naptime," was originally released in June 2024 with the goal of enhancing the efficiency of automated vulnerability detection through AI technology. Jointly developed by Google Project Zero and DeepMind, the primary goal of this project is to achieve intelligent early detection of software vulnerabilities using AI.
▌Zero-Day Vulnerability Type and Remediation Progress

The vulnerability discovered this time is a stack buffer underflow issue, which commonly occurs when a program references an address outside the buffer during memory operations.
For instance, when a pointer is erroneously decremented to a position before the start of the buffer, or when an operation produces a negative index, it can cause the program to crash or even trigger arbitrary code execution.
Google noted in its security blog that while similar memory safety issues are not uncommon in development, this is the first time such a vulnerability has been discovered with the help of AI. According to Google's vulnerability report and the Common Weakness Enumeration (CWE) description, such vulnerabilities are often difficult to prevent, but once triggered, they can lead to severe security consequences.
Under a responsible vulnerability disclosure process, Google remediated this vulnerability in early October 2024. Notably, this vulnerability was found in the development branch of SQLite and had not yet been applied to the official release, providing a valuable time window for the vulnerability to be fixed in advance.
▌Big Sleep's Detection Principles and Technical Breakthroughs

The reason Big Sleep was able to detect this complex vulnerability lies in its AI analysis framework that simulates human behavior. By integrating the code understanding and reasoning capabilities of large language models, Big Sleep can deeply analyze codebases to identify potential vulnerability areas.
The entire detection process is supported by several specialized tools: first, the AI agent automatically navigates within the target codebase, then runs Python scripts in a sandboxed environment for fuzzing to generate various inputs covering different code paths, and finally observes the results through debugging tools to identify vulnerabilities.
This workflow brings a revolutionary improvement to vulnerability detection. Traditionally, vulnerability detection has relied on manual analysis or targeted fuzzing, whereas Big Sleep can automatically generate high-coverage test cases to identify potential threats without relying on human intervention.
Google stated that this AI-driven detection method can find vulnerabilities before software is released, thereby preventing attackers from exploiting known vulnerabilities to launch attacks, offering extremely high defensive potential.
▌Future Application Prospects of AI in the Security Field

Despite Big Sleep's significant achievement in vulnerability detection this time, Google still emphasized that AI-driven vulnerability detection is currently in an experimental stage, and in some scenarios, traditional target-specific fuzzers may still be more effective.
However, as technology continues to advance, Google expects that Big Sleep will not be limited to vulnerability identification but may also expand to broader security protection areas, such as code reviews and real-time threat detection.
This breakthrough by Big Sleep opens up new possibilities for intelligent vulnerability detection. AI's ability to discover and prevent vulnerabilities with higher efficiency and broader coverage brings unprecedented opportunities for innovation to the entire industry. This achievement by Google undoubtedly provides more options and hope for the security industry, making automated vulnerability detection and defense increasingly possible and bringing immense potential to the future security ecosystem.
